Welcome to the volunteer training resource page set up to provide resources to volunteers training to become a free tax preparer. The information below is created to assist you in your IRS certification as a volunteer for VITA Services for West Michigan. The training materials are for you to view at your convenience. If you have any questions on using the materials or the tax information provided, please do not hesitate to contact the program coordinator. These online modules provide an opportunity to learn at your own pace and at your convenience.

Please utilize the resources below. The supplemental materials in each module are referenced during the training video so it is suggested to print them out prior to viewing. If you are unable to print them, please contact the program coordinator to have the documents sent to you.

There are hard copies of some of the materials and an orientation to the program is highly encouraged prior to training.

Extra Supplemental Materials

Property Tax Credits and Home Heating Credits – a lot of people go to the VITA tax sites to complete a “credit only” return. Included is a demonstration video showing focus on the Michigan state credits, the Homestead Property Tax Credit and the Home Heating Credit.
